Will do my best to mediate Kashmir issue: Trump
August 21, 2019
WASHINGTON (Web Desk) – US President Donald Trump has said that he will do his best to mediate or help somehow with the tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir issue. Speaking to the journalists at Oval office, he said Kashmir is a complicated issue and he would discuss the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the weekend at G-7 meeting in France. “We are helping the situation, but there are tremendous problems between two countries and I will do the best I can to mediate or do something,” Donald Trump said. Trump had offered to mediate between Pakistan and India on Kashmir during Prime Minister Imran Khan's inaugural visit to the US, however, India had rejected the offer making it clear that there can't be any third-party intervention on the issue. However, Pakistan welcomed it. “Well, they’ve been having this — these talks for hundreds of years, even under different names. But this is — but its Kashmir. And Kashmir is a very complicated place. You have the Hindus and you have the Muslims, and I wouldn’t say they get along so great. And that’s what you have right now,” Trump said when asked if the issue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours was solvable. “You have millions of people that want to be ruled by others and maybe on both sides. And you have two countries that haven’t gotten along well for a long time. And, frankly, it’s a very explosive situation,” he added.
Trump stresses need to reduce Indo-Pak escalation
A day earlier, the US president spoke with Prime Minister Imran Khan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging a reduction of tensions between indo-Pak escalation and maintaining peace over the disputed Kashmir region. In a statement regarding Trump’s call with Modi, White House spokesperson Hoga Gidley had said: “The US president conveyed the importance of reducing tensions between India and Pakistan and maintaining peace in the region.” “The two leaders [Trump and Modi] further discussed how they will continue to strengthen US-India economic ties through increased trade, and they look forward to meeting again soon.” After phone calls to PM Khan and his Indian counterpart Trump took his twitter and said, “Spoke to my two good friends, Prime Minister Modi of India, and Prime Minister Khan of Pakistan, regarding Trade, Strategic Partnerships and, most importantly, for India and Pakistan to work towards reducing tensions in Kashmir.”
