Zardari to meet Fazl as race for Senate chairmanship in full swing

Zardari to meet Fazl as race for Senate chairmanship in full swing
March 6, 2018
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – As the race for the top slot of Senate Chairman was in full swing, former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari will meet Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman after two days. During the meeting, matters pertaining to election of Senate deputy chairman will also come under discussion. On the other hand, independent member Anwar Kakar has entered in the race for the Senate chairman, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also been contacting groups. Meanwhile, the battle for the top slot in Senate intensified on Tuesday, making the choice even more difficult. Two newly-elected senators from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) met with PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and announced to join the party. As far as number game is concerned, the PML-N has better chances of securing the chairmanship of Senate. With 34 senators already in hand, it requires 19 more to install its man on the top slot. If 10 members from PML-N’s allied parties – Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and National Party (NP) who have five senators each – are counted in, the strength rises to 43. The PML-N will be still short of 10 members to make up the required strength, and the gap could easily be filled if Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (five members), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (five members) and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (1 member) stand by the ruling party. However, it is still to be seen which way these three parties sway. In contrast, the PPP requires at least 33 MPs to clinch the berth for the third consecutive three-year term.
