NAB arrests Capt Safdar in PML-N rally

RAWALPINDI (92 News) – Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader and son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif Captain (r) Safdar has been arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Rawalpindi. According to the reports, Cap Safdar surfaced at PML-N rally in Rawalpindi. The PML-N local leaders were leading a party rally on Liaquat Road when Safdar disembarked from a vehicle and joined the rally. PML-N leaders Senator Chaudhry Tanveer and Malik Shakeel Awan, among others, were leading the rally and brought Safdar into their fold. Safdar said he is here to court arrest among his supporters. He added that the time has come to decide which the path the country has to tread. Meanwhile, the NAB teams led by deputy director Chaudhry Asghar is leading a six-vehicle team to the venue to arrest Safdar. The Punjab Police have been instructed to assist the NAB team in this regard. Earlier in an audio message, Cap Safdar said that he was going to surrender in line with the party decision. He claimed that the PML-N will sweep in Hazara in Elections 2018. "Surrendering is an honourable act," he upheld. "I am an ordinary party worker," he added. A team of the anti-graft watchdog is in Mansehra to arrest Capt (r) Safdar Awan. The Bureau had contacted caretaker government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa seeking help in apprehension of Safdar. Meanwhile, the NAB investigation officer Imran Dogar is leading two teams, one in Mansehra and the other in Capt (r) Safdar’s native village, which are conducting raids with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police's cooperation in a bid to arrest Nawaz's son-in-law. Earlier, the Accountability Court had issued warrants for the arrest of retired Captain Safdar. The sentence, 10 years in prison and a fine of 8 million pounds, or $10.6 million, came almost a year after Supreme Court removed Sharif from office and less than five months after the court barred him from holding office for life. On Friday, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was convicted and sentenced to prison in absentia by the accountability court, in a verdict that is likely to further disrupt an already chaotic campaign for national elections this month.
