ISLAMABAD (92 News) - Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has suggested a five percent cut in the salaries of the judges for holding the elections.

Hearing the plea against the postponement of the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, the chief justice remarked that the country had been facing terrorism since the 1990s.

"The martyrdom of the PPP head was a great tragedy. The elections have been held despite all these conditions," he remarked.

The chief justice observed that section 58 of the Election Act does not allow to cancel the elections.

Justice Muneeb Akhtar observed that the elections can be held at any time and the ECP should be ready for them. "Forces are subservient to the government. How can they refuse to perform the duty?" he queried.

Justice Ejazul Ahsan remarked that the court can rule if the elections are not possible within 90 days. "The ECP could have approached the President for changing the elections date. All administrative institutions are bound to cooperate with the ECP," he ruled.

Later, the hearing was adjourned until Wednesday.
