Govt considers extending Protection of Pakistan Act for another two years

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Interior Ministry has on Thursday contacted Law Ministry for the extension of Rangers special powers under Protection of Pakistan Act 2014 for another two years as the Protection of Pakistan Act (PoPA) 2014 expired last night. The federal government is considering extending the law for another two years. Under the law, the Rangers are allowed to detain any citizen for a duration of up to 60 days without mentioning any reason and obtain physical remand of up to 90 days by producing the arrested people before court. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan will also gets the special ‘police-like’ powers.
