SC rejects plea for stopping proceedings against civilians in military courts

ISLAMABAD (92 News) - The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the plea for stopping the proceedings against civilians in the military courts.

The court directed the attorney general to arrange a contact of the accused with their families today.

The attorney general assured the court that presently no civilian is being tried in a military court. He informed that the proceedings going on presently pertains to assistance within the army. "The accused will be given time to engage lawyers if the trial begins," he assured.

The attorney general informed the court that no under-arrest accused would be awarded the capital punishment and the relatives would be given the copy of the statement.

The court accepted the plea of the petitioners' lawyers for making the statement of the attorney general part of the record.

Aziz Bhindari, counsel for the PTI chairman, contended that the statements of the attorney general and the DG ISPR are contradictory. "The DG ISPR has talked about the trial of 102 accused," he added.

The attorney general submitted the details of 102 people who are in the custody of the military.
