Anti-polio campaign to start in Punjab, Sindh today

LAHORE / KARACHI (92 News) - Anti-polio campaign of varied duration will start in Punjab and Sindh from Monday.

According to the details garnered, more than 14.1 million and 82 thousands children will be vaccinated against polio in 20 districts of Punjab starting from Monday. 33,000 teams have been formed in 20 districts of Punjab for the anti-polio drive which will continue till June 11.

In her statement, Punjab polio programme in-charge Ms Sundas Irshad said the polio campaign will help control virus transmission. "Polio vaccine is very safe which will save children from polio," she added.

Deputy District Health Officer Dr Zahid Mahmood said that two drops of polio vaccine are a guarantee of a child's health.

Apart from Lahore, anti-polio drive is being launched in Attock, Bahawalpur, DG Khan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Jhang, Kasur, Layyah, Lodhran, Mianwali and Muzaffargarh.

Polio vaccinations will also be administered in Nankana Sahib, Okara, Rajanpur, Rawalpindi, Rahim Yar Khan, Sheikhupura and Sialkot.

Meanwhile, a seven-day anti-polio campaign will be started across Sindh from June 7.

During the polio campaign, 8.3 million children under the age of five will be vaccinated across the province, out of which two million are from Karachi.

According to the Sindh Polio programme spokesman, 50,000 teams will take part in the anti-polio campaign.

The spokesperson also said that no case has been reported in Sindh since July 2000 and ordinary polio virus has been found in the sewage water. The spokesperson directed the people to take their children to the hospital during the campaign.
