British MP Jo Cox dies after being shot

LONDON – Labour MP (Member of Parliament) Jo Cox has died after being shot and stabbed in the street outside her constituency advice surgery.

“The death of Jo Cox is a tragedy. She was a committed and caring MP (Member of Parliament). My thoughts are with her husband Brendan and her two young children,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter.

Jo Cox, 41, was left bleeding on the ground by her attacker. A 77-year-old man also suffered slight injuries.

A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police said. The MP held a weekly advice surgery nearby. REUTERS
