Children among 13 killed in Karachi landsliding
KARACHI (92 News) – At least 13 people including seven children were killed as a landslide hit shanties in a slum in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar area on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when a mass of rocks and soil fell on a slum from a nearby hill, burying three camps of laborers family in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block One.
Rescuers and area residents rushed to the site and dug out 13 bodies including seven children and three women from the rubble. Rangers and policemen also arrived at the scene and participated in the rescue operation.
The ill-fated family came from Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan of eastern province of Punjab. The bodies were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East Javaid Jaskani said that a team has been constituted to investigate into the incident.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of 13 people landsliding in Karachi. He directed the concerned authorities to speed up relief efforts and ensure recovery of all people stuck in the sand.
Prime Minister has also directed to provide special medical care to the injured and every possible help to the families of the deceased.
