Communal clashes kill six in Indian PM’s home state
AHMADABAD – Six people have been killed in fresh communal clashes in Gujarat, Indian PM Narendra Modi’s home state, reported 92 News.
However, Modi has appealed for calm.
Police and paramilitary forces tried to quell riots led by members of Patel community demanding government benefits.
Curfew was imposed in at least five cities in Gujarat on Tuesday night after mobs attacked police with stones and sticks and burned vehicles.
Ahmadabad’s streets were deserted as schools and businesses closed after the Patel community leader called for a general strike to press the group’s demands for the special status given to many minorities in India, guaranteeing them a share of government jobs and school places.
