Illegal appointments: SC orders suspension of PU VC Dr Zakaria Zakar
LAHORE (92 News) – Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday ordered the suspension of University of Punjab Vice-Chancellor Dr Zakaria Zakar while hearing illegal appointments of universities’ vice-chancellors.
A two-member bench, headed by the CJP, also ordered that university’s senior-most professor should be appointed to serve as interim vice-chancellor.
The CJP questioned on whose authority the university agreed to give 80 kanal of its land to the government.
The court also summoned the members of the syndicate that was responsible for selling the land. It has been proven that the government does not appoint a continuous vice-chancellor so that it could enforce its legal and illegal requests, the CJP observed.
Meanwhile, the CJP took suo motu notice of the World Trade Organization appointment of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s former principal secretary Dr Syed Tauqir Shah.
He ordered that record pertaining to the appointment of Tauqeer Shah as Pakistani’s Ambassador to World Trade Organization should be submitted to the court. During the court proceedings, Chief Justice Nisar asked Khawaja Salman Rafique, who serves as Punjab minister for specialized healthcare and medical education, as to why his face has turned pale over the suo motu notice.
“We are told that we are interfering, now let’s see how transparent this appointment was,” the CJP added. He remarked that Switzerland is heaven for those having plenty of wealth. Dr Tauqir Shah has also been summoned to appear before the Supreme Court.
During hearing of cases against quacks, Chief Justice resented over interference of the ‘so-called doctors’. Justice Saqib Nisar remarked the action has just begun adding that quacks may be sent to jail. He said those involved in spoiling people’s life, don’t deserve any favour.
