ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) while barring the Lahore High Court (LHC) from hearing the Zainab murder case, summoned the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the rape and murder of minor girl on Sunday. A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprises of Justice Umer Atta Bandial and Justice Ijazul Hassan heard the suo moto case. During the proceedings, Additional Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abubakar Khuda Baksh appeared and told the court that four Zainab murder like incidents occurred in 2016 and two cases occurred in 2017, adding that investigation is underway. The CJP remarked that no significant progress in the case is visible so far and more time cannot be given. He observed that the Kasur incident is a test of the police’s ability and failing to arrest the accused would be the failure of the police and provincial government. Justice Saqib Nisar further remarked that Zainab’s murder is not just one incident but eight other incidents occurred and the whole nation is upset over the incident. What has been done in the case so far," the chief justice inquired. The CJP further observed that there should be a firm belief that the killer will be caught as the court doesn't "want the suspect caught and killed in an encounter". Commenting on parliament, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar remarked that Parliament is supreme, adding that Aitzaz Ahsan should raise issue. I have also requested Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani for the reforms, he said adding that he is ready to meet parliament members of the issue of reforms. Chief Justice Nisar summoned the JIT, formed to probe the incident, at the next hearing on Sunday, which will be heard in the Lahore Registry. The head of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency has also been summoned.
