PM, Iranian president hold wide-ranging consultations

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan held a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at Tehran on Sunday.

During the meeting, the prime minister held wide-ranging consultations with President Rouhani. This is the second meeting between the two leaders within one month. He also said Pakistan attaches high importance to bilateral ties with Iran.

“Pakistan attaches high importance to bilateral ties with Iran. “Pakistan is willing to play its role towards strengthening peace and stability in the region,” the premier said.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Syed Zulfiqar Abbas Bukhari and other officials were also present during the meeting.

Earlier, the prime minister was received by Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif upon arrival.

It is pertinent to mention here that PM’s visit aims to promote peace and security in the region. During the visit, PM Khan will have meetings with the Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei and President Dr Hassan Rouhani.

Besides issues relating to peace and security in the Gulf, bilateral matters and important regional developments will be discussed. The prime minister also had a bilateral meeting with the Iranian president on the sidelines of 74th UNGA Session in New York in September 2019.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said PM Imran Khan’s visit to Iran carries much significance as the premier will attempt to remove misunderstandings between the brotherly countries to avoid war.

Talking to 92 News, the FM said war between the two countries would not only harm the Muslim Ummah but also damage security environment of the region.

“We hope to prefer peace and remove misconceptions through diplomacy,” Qureshi maintained.

He said the problem had several aspects while different countries had different stakes, adding global efforts to resolve the problem also remained unsuccessful, but it didn’t mean that efforts be discontinued for peace.
