DUBAI (92 News) – The Indian Aces tightened their control on their lead of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) with a 25-18 win over the Japan Warriors while the hosts UAE Royals, led by Roger Federer, suffered a surprise 24-26 defeat to the Philippine Mavericks on Monday (December 14).

The Indian Aces came into the first of the three days of competition in Dubai with six wins and just one defeat from the previous events in Kobe Japan, Manila Philippines and Delhi India to head the standings of the five-team competition.

The Aces began their tie with an unexpected defeat in the mixed doubles set, Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza of India losing 4-6 to Pierre Hugues-Hubert of France and Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.

The Aces hit back by winning 12 of the next 13 games, with Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska defeating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia 6-1 and then Fabrice Santoro of France demolishing Swede Thomas Enqvist 6-0 in the legends’ singles to give the Aces a 16-7 lead.

Bopanna teamed up with Ivan Dodig of Croatia to win the men’s doubles set 6-5 against Hugues-Hubert and Leander Paes of India and give the Aces an unassailable lead, although German Philipp Kohlschreiber gave the Warriors some compensation with a 6-3 win over Bernard Tomic of Australia in the last of the five sets.

The second match between the Royals and the Mavericks hinged on the last set, a men’s singles between Federer and Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Federer had just surprisingly lost the previous set, a men’s doubles with Croatian Marin Cilic, 6-4 against Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France and Treat Huey of the Philippines.

This left the match balanced at 20-20 with Federer expected to defeat the big-serving Karlovic in the final set. However, Karlovic broke Federer’s serve and was able to hold on to serve out for victory 6-4.

In the overall standings, the Indian Aces lead from the Singapore Slammers with the Royals third followed by the Mavericks and the Warriors.

On Tuesday (December 15), the Mavericks play the Aces at 1200gmt with the Royals up against the Slammers at 1530gmt.
