World Book & Copyright Day being observed today
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The World Book and Copyright Day is being observed in the country on Monday (today).
The 2018 edition is entitled ‘Reading, it’s my right!’, and it will be an opportunity to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It is an annual event organized to foster a global appreciation for reading and to promote writing, publishing and familiarity with copyright laws around the world.
This event was first held in 1995 at the behest of the UN’s UNESCO General Conference held that year in Paris.
April23 is a symbolic date for world literature. It was a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity, according to UNESCO .
Each year, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry – publishers, booksellers and libraries, select the World Book Capital for a one-year period, effective23 Aprileach year.
